When the hero ,Walter Harright on a moonlit night in north London encounters a solitary terrified and beatiful woman dressed in white  he feels impelled to solve the myster of her distress.

The intricate plot is people with a finely characterised cast from the peeves invaid Mr. Fairlie to the corpulent villian Count Fosco and the enigmatic woman herself.
